How it all started

There are many stories about Tage Andersen and his journey with flowers. Those of you who have followed his work over the years will already know parts of it; moments, places, impressions that have settled into memory. 

One of the stories that has been retold many times is that of Tage Andersen’s arrival in Copenhagen. Picture this: a summer day in early June 1976. A truck making its way from central Jutland to Copenhagen, carrying Tage Andersen, his two dachshunds, an irritable parrot, all his odds and ends, and bunches of dried baby’s breath (brudeslør) dangling from the ceiling of the truck. 

What arrived was not simply a man and his things, but a way of seeing—a way of being—and a huge personality. And as we know today, that was the start of a change that would forever alter Copenhagen’s floral scene.

For decades, Tage Andersen has followed his own path with a rare combination of vision, imagination and hard work. Nothing has ever been too ambitious, and no detail too small to escape his attention.

This year - 2026 - marks 50 years of his work in Copenhagen. 

How do you celebrate a life’s work?

How, then, do you honour a life’s work of such scale and singularity? Whatever we, the team around him, do to mark this moment, it will inevitably feel inadequate in the light of what he has created.

And yet, celebrate we must—for Tage Andersen’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Tage Andersen is an aging man. Next year he will turn 80, and it is clear that, at this stage in life, his attention is drawn ever more toward what is close at hand. Beyond the flowers, one thing has remained constant throughout the years: his deep appreciation of good company.

Our celebration will therefore be a gentle reflection on all that has been created—his artworks, exhibitions, and events—and, above all, the relationships that have been built over the years.
